NETTL, PAUL
NETTL, PAUL (1889–1972), musicologist. Born in Hohenelbe, Bohemia, Nettl was lecturer in musicology in Prague from 1919 until 1939, when he immigrated to the United States. He taught in Chicago, and at Indiana University (1946–60). His works include: Alte juedische Spielleute und Musiker (1923); The Story of Dance Music (1947); The Book of Musical Documents (1948); The Other Casanova (1950) concerning Lorenzo da Ponte; Forgotten Musicians (1951); Beethoven Encyclopedia (1956); and Mozart and Masonry (1957). His son BRUNO was an ethnomusicologist, specializing in the study of American Indian music.
